The Most Important Thing
In ultimate, there are no referees. You call your own fouls. You tell the truth, even when it's hard. You treat every player — on your team and the other team — with respect. This is called Spirit of the Game. It means being a good person is more important than winning. If you can do that, the Code will take care of the rest.
Hey — welcome to the Code! You're about to learn something cool. Hex is a way to play ultimate frisbee where nobody waits around. No lines. No standing still. Everybody moves, everybody throws, everybody matters. When it works, it feels like magic — like your whole team can read each other's minds. There are only four rules. Learn them and the magic starts by itself.
Before You Start
These four rules all happen at the same time. You don't do one and then the next — you do all of them, always! That sounds hard, but here's a secret: it's supposed to feel weird at first. The first few times you play, it'll be messy. That's totally fine. Keep trying. It clicks.

Rule 1 — This One First!
Make Triangles
Always stand so you make a triangle shape with two teammates. If you can't see a triangle, move until you can!
Don't have the frisbee? This is your job! Find your triangle.
Why it works
Triangles are the strongest shape there is. Bees use them. Bridges use them. When you stand in a triangle with two friends, the person with the frisbee always has two people to throw to. That means the other team can't stop everything. Pretty sneaky, right?
⚠ Without it → everyone bunches up, nowhere to throw
Rule 2
Throw to Free
See a teammate with nobody in the way? Throw it to them! Right now! Don't wait!
Don't have the frisbee? Get open! Move to where nobody is blocking you. Wave your arms!
Why it works
A frisbee flies way faster than any kid can run. Every second you hold it, the other team gets closer. So throw it fast! Look for the teammate who's waving at you — that's the one who's free.
⚠ Without it → you hold it too long and get stuck
Rule 3
Throw and Go
After you throw the frisbee — RUN! The person you threw it to will probably throw it right back!
Someone just threw it to you? Look to give it right back! They're already running!
Why it works
This is called a give-and-go. Basketball players do it. Soccer players do it. You throw, you run, you get it back. It works because the other team expects you to stop after you throw. Don't stop!
⚠ Without it → you throw and stand there like a statue
Rule 4
Flow All Ways
Forward, backward, sideways — the frisbee doesn't care! Every direction is an attack. Backward isn't going the wrong way. It's a TRICK.
Standing behind the thrower? You're still in the play! Call for it!
Why it works
If you only throw forward, the other team knows exactly where to stand. But if you throw everywhere? They have to guard everywhere. And they can't. That's why backward throws are actually sneaky forward moves.
⚠ Without it → everyone just goes one direction and gets stuck
The Reset
When Nothing's Working
Stop. Look at the middle of the field. Find your triangle. You're back!
This works for everybody — even if you stopped moving and were just watching. Face the middle. Find your triangle. You're back in the game.
Why it matters
Every game has a reset button. This is yours. When everything gets crazy, just stop and find your triangle. The shape comes back. The magic comes back.
When You Turn It Over
Dropped the frisbee? That's OK! Ask yourself: which rule broke? Everyone squished together? Rule 1. Held it too long? Rule 2. Threw it and stood still? Rule 3. Only threw forward? Rule 4. Now you know what to practice!
Your Rule
You know all four rules. But you'll find one that's YOUR rule. Maybe you're the kid who always finds the perfect triangle spot. Maybe you're the fast thrower. Maybe you're the runner who never stops. Maybe you're the one who sees the backward throw nobody else sees. All of those are awesome.
On Your Own
The Code needs a team. Your throws don't! Take your frisbee home and practice. Throw at a tree. Throw at a fence. Count how many good throws you can make in a row. Every throw you practice makes the Code work better when you're back with your team.
Say it before every point!
